Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy 2018:

 

New Trends in Media and Journalism: Disinformation, Verification of News and Constructive Journalism in a Changing World

 

 

 

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications of Aristotle University Thessaloniki (AUT), Jean Monet Chair for European IntegrationJournalism with participating partners Deutsche Welle Akademie(DW Akademie), University of Zagreb Croatia, University of Novi-Sad Serbia, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Center for Media and Information Literacy at Temple University USA, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Media LiteracyInstitute,Proof organization will organise the 2ndThessaloniki International Media Summer Academy: "New Trends in Media andJournalism: Disinformation, Verification of News and Constructive Journalism ina Changing World“ in Thessaloniki, Greece, between 13th-21th July 2018. The jointinitiative brings together the reputation and expertise of respected andwell-known institutions from Europe, Asia and USA. The Academy will be supported by established organizations, companies and thinktanks (Aegean Airlines, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Journalists Union of Macedonia and Thrace Daily Newspapers)

 

 

 

Description:

 

Today, accurate information is an increasinglycritical resource for our understanding of the world. Building on the success of the 2017 Summer School, weare looking forward to welcoming another group of participants from all overthe world to Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy. This year the Academy will focus on new trends onmedia and journalism with emphasis on how to deal with disinformation, fakenews and verification techniques and how to acquire the competencesneeded.  

The intensive multi-disciplinary training course aimsto provide in-depth knowledge and profound skills training on important topicsand developments in media and communication. Participants will gain a better understanding of the latest academicresearch, as well as the recent policy, market and professional trends in thefocused area, and will develop a network of colleagues to share theirexperiences, ideas and views. 

 

 

 

 

Thessaloniki International MediaSummer Academy will addressand focus on issues that are timely and critically important:

 

-         The influenceof fake news 

-         Developing methods of news verification

-         New Trends inMedia, Journalism and News

-         ConstructiveJournalism

-         Media &News Literacy

 

The Summer Academyintendsto be a major forum where current issues and research developments will bepresented. For this purpose, distinguished international scholars will beinvited to share their expertise through lectures, collaborative studydesigns, digital content development, and theoretical models.

This year and immediately after the completion of thecore courses the International Media SummerAcademy in co-operation with the Proof Organisation: Media for Social Justice[1]will organise a special optional workshop on “Witnessing:Refugee Testimonies and Advocacy Workshop” as an additional choice forthe attendants.

During the Summer Academy, participants will contribute in workshopsdeveloping case studies, extending their methodological knowledgethrough hands on-practices. This course is a unique opportunity to benefit fromthe Organizers’ outstanding research in the field of journalism/communicationcombined with the expertise of pioneering media professionals. The program isstructured around keynote presentations by distinguished experts, interactivesmall group work, and roundtable discussions. The courses will be delivered using a multi-method approach which willinclude lectures, discussion, small group work, policy lab and hands-onactivities. Sessions will be led by experts from across different fields,including research, data science, policy making, and mass media industry.

 

Who can apply:

Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy aims to host a total number of 40 selectedjunior scholars, researchers or practitioners, having the following background:

 

-Bachelor/ Master/ PhD Students ofJournalism, Political Science, International Relations, etc

-Professionals from media and otherrelated organisations who need a deeper understanding on the issues to beaddressed.

 

The application should include thefollowing material:

1) a completed application form;

2) a copy of the applicant’s CV

All applicants should be fluent in English.

Fees

The cost is €600 andcovers tuition fees, accommodation in Thessaloniki, breakfast and lunches,costs for the day-trip, health care insurance and related costs such asstationary. Travel to and from Thessaloniki, visa costs (we are happy to supplyan invitation letter), some dinners, additional spending in Thessaloniki arenot included in this fee.

We are happy to supportapplications for external funding for the summer school with proof ofacceptance and a letter of support.
